Chicago in November 2026: weather, events and is it worth it?

Yes, especially from November 13 onward. That's when Chicago's holiday season opens all at once, while hotel demand is still calmer than in peak December. You trade warm weather and long days for cold, gray afternoons, and get the Lights Festival, the tree lighting, Christkindlmarket, outdoor ice rinks and a full theatre calendar within about a week.

November 2026 in short

  • Best dates: November 20–22, 2026. The Millennium Park tree lighting and Christkindlmarket open Friday, November 20, the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is Saturday, November 21, and the Bears host the Saints at Soldier Field on Sunday, November 22.
  • Weather: November is a cold-shoulder month. Normal highs fall from about 55°F (13°C) on November 1 to about 42°F (5°C) by November 30. Sunsets come before 4:50 PM all month. November averages only 1.8 inches of snow, though some years bring much more.
  • Who should go: holiday-lovers, theatre fans and museum-goers who don't mind packing warm layers. If you want long sunny days or lakefront biking, come in September or October instead; our best time to visit Chicago guide compares the months.

With sunset before five, most November days end indoors. The Chicago CityPASS is our pick for the month: $144 per adult for Shedd Aquarium, Skydeck and three more attractions, rated 4.7/5 from more than 1,000 reviews, with nine days to use it, so you can keep the museums for the gray days. The calendar shows live availability.

Is Chicago worth visiting in November?

November is really two different months in Chicago.

Early November (November 1–12) is quiet shoulder season. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and sunset jumps to about 4:45 PM overnight. The holiday events haven't started yet, but the last fall color often hangs on in Lincoln Park and along the lakefront, museums are uncrowded, and this is usually the cheapest window downtown. It suits travelers who mainly want museums, architecture, food and theatre.

Mid-to-late November (November 13–30) is when the holiday season starts. Holiday light shows open in the suburbs on November 13–14. Downtown's big kickoff runs November 20–22, Thanksgiving is November 26, and Black Friday shopping follows on the 27th. The atmosphere peaks here, and so do crowds and hotel rates.

Our verdict: if you can travel any time in November, book the November 20–22 weekend for the full holiday kickoff, or November 13–19 for festive lights with fewer crowds. Choose early November only if price matters more to you than the festivities.

Chicago weather in November

These figures come from the National Weather Service's official 1991–2020 normals for Chicago (O'Hare). Downtown by the lake can feel a few degrees milder at night but windier by day.

PeriodNormal highNormal lowWhat it feels like
Early November (Nov 1)55°F / 13°C40°F / 4°CCrisp fall days; light jacket weather at midday
Mid-November (Nov 15)49°F / 9°C34°F / 1°CCold mornings, frost possible; proper coat needed
Late November (Nov 30)42°F / 5°C29°F / −2°CEarly winter; nights below freezing
  • Precipitation: O'Hare averages 2.42 inches (about 61 mm) of precipitation in November, mostly as rain or drizzle.
  • Snow: the normal November snowfall is just 1.8 inches (about 4.6 cm), and many Novembers see only a dusting. Don't count on that, though. According to the National Weather Service Chicago office's November 2025 climate summary, November 2025 brought 10.4 inches, Chicago's 7th-snowiest November on record, including a record daily snowfall of 8.4 inches at O'Hare on November 29.
  • Clouds: November averages 17.7 cloudy days, one of the grayest months of the year.
  • Wind: the average wind speed is about 11 mph (17 km/h), and gusts off Lake Michigan make it feel colder than the thermometer says, especially on the Michigan Avenue bridges and at Navy Pier.
  • Daylight: sunrise is about 6:22 AM on November 1 and about 6:56 AM on November 30. Sunset slides from about 4:46 PM to about 4:22 PM, so you have roughly 10 hours of daylight early in the month and under 9.5 hours by the end. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the mornings and save the evenings for lights and shows.

Other experiences you might enjoy

November in Chicago is a month for indoor sights and early evenings out (see our guide to indoor things to do in Chicago in winter): the Art Institute of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum on Museum Campus, sunset from Skydeck or 360 CHICAGO, and a comedy show at The Second City. Early in the month, the last architecture river cruises of the season are still running. The options below can fill out the rest of your trip.

What to pack for Chicago in November

Layers matter most, because you'll go from heated museums and trains to windy street corners all day long.

  • Insulated, wind-resistant coat: mid-weight for early November, a warm parka-style coat after mid-month.
  • Base and mid layers: thermal tops or merino, plus a sweater or fleece you can take off indoors.
  • Waterproof footwear: comfortable, water-resistant boots or sneakers with grip. You'll walk a lot, and slush happens.
  • Hat, gloves and scarf: essential for the evening parade, the tree lighting and any lakefront walk.
  • Small umbrella: November rain is more common than snow.
  • Hand warmers: cheap and very useful for standing through a 2-hour parade.
  • Smart-casual evening layer: Chicago dress codes are relaxed for theatre and dinners, but a nicer sweater goes a long way.

The full checklist, with month-by-month adjustments and what to wear to a Bears game, is in our Chicago winter packing list.

The big four, in detail

Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival (Saturday, November 21). This 35th-anniversary edition centers on what The Magnificent Mile Association calls "the largest evening parade in the United States and the third-largest parade in the country." Lights Festival Lane runs 11 AM–4 PM at Pioneer Court (401 N. Michigan Ave). The parade, led by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, steps off from Oak Street at 5:30 PM and heads south on North Michigan Avenue toward the river, lighting one million lights on more than 200 trees, and fireworks over the Chicago River follow at about 7:15–7:30 PM. North Michigan Avenue closes to traffic from 3 to 7:30 PM.

Christkindlmarket Chicago (November 20–December 24). The German-style market celebrates its 30th season at Daley Plaza. Organizer German American Events told Block Club Chicago it is "super-excited to celebrate 30 years at Daley Plaza this year," with special-edition anniversary mugs. It's open Sunday–Thursday 11 AM–8 PM and Friday–Saturday 11 AM–9 PM, with short 11 AM–4 PM hours on Thanksgiving. Go on a weekday afternoon: weekend evenings get long entry lines. If you'd like a guide, the holiday food and walking tour of festive sites ($85, three hours) includes VIP entry to the Christkindlmarket; it is rated 4.8/5 but from only 19 reviews, so check the dates offered match yours.

Christmas Tree Lighting (Friday, November 20). The City's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) starts festivities at 4 PM in Millennium Park. The ceremony begins at 6 PM, and the tree is lit at about 6:30 PM with fireworks. It stays lit through January 10, 2027.

Chicago Thanksgiving Parade (Thursday, November 26). The parade runs north on State Street from Ida B. Wells Drive to Randolph Street, with Bears legend Charles "Peanut" Tillman as grand marshal. Sources disagree on the start time: the City lists 8 AM, while ABC7 reports a 7:45 AM step-off. Arrive by 7:30 AM either way.

Sports in November

  • Bears: two November home games at Soldier Field, November 8 against the Buccaneers (Sunday Night Football) and November 22 against the Saints. Thanksgiving Day is an away game at Detroit, so it's a sports-bar day, not a stadium day. Bears game tickets are sold through the team and resale sites, so confirm the seat details before you pay.
  • Bulls (United Center): home games on November 8, 11 (Spurs), 13, 20, 22, 23 and 28. Bulls tickets are sold through the team and resale sites.
  • Blackhawks (United Center): home games scheduled for November 2, 12, 14, 17 (Maple Leafs), 19, 27 (Rangers) and 29. Confirm puck-drop times on the team site, since published times vary for some dates. Blackhawks game tickets start at $91, rated 4.7/5 but from only 14 reviews.

Best things to do in Chicago in November

Indoors, for cold or gray days

  1. Art Institute of Chicago: see the Impressionist galleries, then catch the holiday wreaths on the lions out front later in the season. The Art Institute fast-pass ticket starts at $40 and holds 4.8/5 from more than 1,000 reviews.
  2. Museum Campus: the Field Museum (tickets from $29, 4.7/5 from more than 850 reviews), Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium sit side by side, so you can make a full day of it. Shedd has no stand-alone ticket on GetYourGuide; it comes inside the CityPASS and the Go City passes below.
  3. Skydeck or 360 CHICAGO: go just before the early sunset, around 4 PM, to watch the city lights come on. Skydeck Chicago tickets start at $47 (4.6/5 from more than 5,000 reviews) and 360 CHICAGO tickets at $27 (4.4/5 from more than 3,800 reviews). Our Skydeck and 360 CHICAGO comparison helps you choose.
  4. Theatre: the Goodman's A Christmas Carol, Broadway In Chicago tours or an improv show at The Second City.
  5. Navy Pier: open year-round, and the indoor Winter WonderFest starts the day after Thanksgiving.

Outdoors, bundled up

  1. Skating: try the free McCormick Tribune Ice Rink near "The Bean" or the quarter-mile Maggie Daley Park Skating Ribbon.
  2. Late fall color: in early November, walk Lincoln Park and the lakefront path.
  3. Holiday light walks: visit ZooLights in the city, or Lightscape and Illumination in the suburbs (you'll need a car or rideshare). Dates, prices and transit for each are in our Chicago holiday lights guide.
  4. Igloos and heated rooftops: several bars and restaurants set up heated pods for skyline dining in the cold.

To string these into days, start from our 1, 2 and 3-day Chicago itineraries and swap the outdoor stops for the indoor ones above on the coldest days.

Where to stay in Chicago in November

In cold weather, location matters more than ever. Stay where you can walk or take a short train ride to the action.

The Loop: best for first-timers and holiday events. You'll be steps from Christkindlmarket, Millennium Park's tree and ice rink, the State Street parade route, the theatre district and the Art Institute. Weekday rates can be good value because many Loop hotels serve business travelers. See hotels in the Loop

Magnificent Mile and Streeterville: best for shopping and the Lights Festival. You'll be on or near the parade route, close to Black Friday shopping, Navy Pier and lake views. Expect the highest rates of the month on November 20–22. See hotels on the Magnificent Mile

River North: best for food and nightlife. It has dense restaurants and bars and is a short walk to Michigan Avenue and the river. It's often a little cheaper than the Mag Mile while staying just as central. See hotels in River North

Lincoln Park and Lakeview: best for a local feel. Choose this area for ZooLights, neighborhood restaurants and Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville. You'll have more space for the money, and the CTA Red or Brown Line gets you downtown. See hotels in Lincoln Park

Booking tip: if you're coming for the Lights Festival weekend or Thanksgiving, book as early as possible, because those dates fill first. For the best rates, aim for Sunday–Thursday nights before November 20. Compare all Chicago hotels

Should you buy a Chicago city pass in November?

November's short, chilly days push you toward indoor attractions, so a pass makes sense for many visitors.

  • Chicago CityPASS: best for most first-timers. It costs $144 per adult and $114 per child (ages 3–11). It includes Shedd Aquarium and Skydeck, plus 3 more from a list that includes the Field Museum, Art Institute, Adler Planetarium, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, 360 CHICAGO and the Shoreline architecture river tour. You get 9 days to use it, which suits a relaxed November pace.
  • Chicago C3 by CityPASS: $109 per adult for any 3 attractions, and a good fit for short weekend trips. It's sold through CityPASS directly, not on GetYourGuide.
  • Go City Chicago (All-Inclusive or Explorer): the most attractions. Go City's own site lists the 1-day All-Inclusive pass at $149 (the same price on GetYourGuide, 4.5/5 from more than 370 reviews) per adult ($109 per child), and listings on resellers such as Expedia and AttractionTicketShop show it at $139 per adult ($99 per child, ages 3–12), so prices vary by seller. It only pays off if you'll do 3 or more paid attractions a day, which is harder with November's 4:30 PM sunsets. The Go City Explorer Pass (from $84 for two attractions, 4.5/5 from more than 400 reviews) lets you pick a set number of attractions over 30 days instead.

Our pick for November: the CityPASS. The 9-day window lets you match museum days to bad-weather days. One caution: check whether the architecture river cruise still runs during your dates, because it's an outdoor, seasonal option. The Shoreline architecture river cruise (from $39 on its own, 4.8/5 from more than 4,700 reviews) is the one the CityPASS includes.

Our Chicago CityPASS vs Go City comparison works through which pass suits which trip.

Pros and cons of visiting Chicago in November

  • The holiday season starts, with several major events packed into November 20–26.
  • Many of the biggest events are free, including the Lights Festival, the tree lighting, Christkindlmarket entry, the Thanksgiving Parade and the Millennium Park rink.
  • Early November usually brings lower hotel rates and lighter crowds than summer or December.

Cons

  • It's cold, gray and windy, and nights fall below freezing by late month.
  • Sunsets come before 4:50 PM all month.

  • Some seasonal outdoor tours scale back or stop.
  • The weather is unpredictable, and a significant early snowstorm is possible.

Practical tips for November visitors

  • Getting around: the CTA "L" trains and buses are the easiest way to skip cold walks and pricey parking. From O'Hare take the Blue Line, and from Midway the Orange Line. The underground Pedway links many Loop buildings, stations and Millennium Park garages, which helps on sleety days, but it mostly operates during weekday business hours. A two-hour Pedway walking tour (4.7/5 from more than 300 reviews) shows you the route.
  • Daylight saving time: clocks fall back at 2 AM on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Adjust tour and flight times.
  • Thanksgiving closures (November 26): many museums close, including the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium, and many restaurants run limited hours. Book Thanksgiving dinner early. Christkindlmarket opens 11 AM–4 PM, and Illumination is closed that day.
  • Lights Festival logistics: Michigan Avenue closes from 3 to 7:30 PM on November 21. Use the CTA Red Line (Grand or Chicago stations) and claim a viewing spot by about 4:30 PM.
  • Free museum days: if you have an Illinois ID, the Field Museum is free for Illinois residents on Wednesdays throughout 2026 (reserve ahead). The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is free for residents November 2–4 and November 30. Out-of-state visitors pay standard prices, which is where a pass helps.
  • Navy Pier note: November 30 to December 2 aren't on Winter WonderFest's public schedule (group reservations start November 30), so check before you go.
  • Reservations: book ZooLights, Lightscape and Illumination in advance, since popular nights sell out. The Millennium Park rink also requires free online reservations.
