Christkindlmarket 2026 in short

  • When and where: Daley Plaza (50 W Washington St) is open November 20 to December 24, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wrigleyville (Gallagher Way) stays open to December 31, and Aurora (RiverEdge Park) runs Thursday to Sunday through December 24.
  • Cost: entry is free at all three markets. You pay for food, drinks and the collectible mug, which cost $10 empty in 2025; 2026 prices are posted at the mug booths.
  • Timing: weekend evenings at Daley Plaza meant long entry lines in 2025, when the city capped how many people could be inside. Aim for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a weekday, and stay in the Loop so you can walk over.

On a bitter day, you can reach the plaza almost without going outside: the Pedway, the city's network of underground walkways, links Washington (Blue Line), Lake (Red Line) and the Daley Center. The two-hour Chicago Underground Pedway walking tour (4.7/5 from more than 300 reviews) shows you the route and the downtown buildings above it, which makes it an easy first-day plan before a market visit. The calendar shows live availability for your dates.

Choose Daley Plaza for the original downtown market and the easiest pairing with Millennium Park and State Street. Wrigleyville is the only one open after Christmas, so it suits anyone in town between Christmas and New Year's. Aurora has the most room and the most vendors, and it's the better fit if you dislike crowds and have a car or can take Metra.

Other experiences you might enjoy

The market sits a short walk from the rest of downtown Chicago's holiday season (our Chicago holiday lights 2026 guide maps a free walk past it all): the City of Chicago Christmas Tree and the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park, the windows at Macy's on State Street, and the Loop Theatre District. For warm, indoor days, the Art Institute of Chicago is next to Millennium Park on Michigan Avenue, and Skydeck at Willis Tower is a 15-minute walk from the plaza. A short history: from Pioneer Court to 30 years on Daley Plaza

The German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest came up with the market in 1995 as a way to promote trade between the U.S. and Germany. The model was Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, which dates to the 16th century. Founder Ray Lotter brought in German and Chicago companies for the first market in 1996, held at Pioneer Court on North Michigan Avenue. In 1997 it moved to Daley Plaza at the invitation of Mayor Richard M. Daley, and it has been there ever since.

The market is now huge. Leila Schmidt, the market's senior marketing and communications manager, told WBBM Newsradio that 2023 drew "1.3 million visitors at Daley Plaza; 480,000 in Wrigleyville and 240,000 at the Aurora location." That's more than 2 million visitors across the three sites.

That success caused trouble in 2025. Hours before opening day, the city capped attendance at 1,553 people at a time. It later added 1,000, and the Chicago Sun-Times reported "the new capacity limit of 2,553 at the market." That was still below the 2021 COVID-era limit of 3,494. At the end of the 2025 season, Kate Bleeker, vice president of German American Events, told CBS Chicago: "Our numbers, we're looking at about 50 percent attendance from what we normally see." Mayor Brandon Johnson raised the idea of moving the market, telling reporters (per Block Club Chicago) that a solution "may include looking at a much larger space."

In the end, CBS Chicago reported on August 20, 2026 that "organizers said the event would return to Daley Plaza this year from Nov. 20 through Dec. 24." As of mid-October 2026, no crowd-management rules for this season had been announced, so plan as if a cap and entry lines are possible.

The Christkindlmarket mug and other collectibles

Collecting the mug is half the fun. Each season brings a new annual mug, a non-alcoholic mug, a beer stein and a glass ornament, all sold at the info and merchandise booths at the three markets while supplies last. Organizers hadn't published 2026 prices when we checked. As a guide, NBC Chicago reported 2025 prices of $10 for the annual mug (empty), $20 for the half-liter stein and $28 for the Krampus plush.

For the 30th anniversary, the 2026 range has been described as:

  • Annual mug: a 200 ml pearl-white mug with a new flute shape (pearl is the traditional 30th-anniversary symbol), showing a market scene and fireworks. You can buy it on its own or filled with a hot drink, including Glühwein for guests 21+.
  • Christmas Tree mug: the non-alcoholic mug, shaped like an evergreen and wrapped in a garland of miniature ornaments from past years. Fill it with hot chocolate, cider, tea or chai.
  • 30th-anniversary beer stein: a half-liter stein in Christmas-tree green. Guests 21+ can have it filled with beer for an extra charge.
  • Mini stein shot cup: a new 40 ml miniature stein.
  • 2026 ornament: a glass-blown, hand-painted snow-globe design made in Poland with Chicago Ornament Company.
  • Gift box: both 2026 mugs plus treats from vendors, to pre-order for shipping or pick up at any of the three markets.
  • Extras: a Krampus stuffie with a new look, enamel pins including a 30th-anniversary pin, and a magnet.

Mug returns: Chicago doesn't appear to run the European deposit (Pfand) system. The mug is sold as a souvenir, and organizers haven't published any refund policy, so budget for keeping it. The 2026 Glühwein price hasn't been published either; check the board at the booth.

What to eat and drink at Christkindlmarket

The food is the main reason many locals go. Expect German and Central European street food, plus long lines at the raclette stand.

  1. Glühwein: hot mulled wine. Organizers import it from Nuremberg, and it's the drink the market is known for.
  2. Raclette sandwich: melted Alpine cheese scraped onto bread, from Baked Cheese Haus. It's pungent, and it usually has the longest line.
  3. Potato pancakes (Kartoffelpuffer or Reibekuchen): crispy and served with apple sauce or sour cream.
  4. Bratwurst and frankfurters: classic grilled sausages. Look for German Grill.
  5. Currywurst and döner: DönerMen gets consistently strong reviews.
  6. Giant pretzels and stuffed pretzels: good for sharing while you walk.
  7. Apple strudel: served warm by Helmut's Original Austrian Strudel, a favorite of food critics.
  8. Sweets: roasted sugared almonds, stollen, Lebkuchen (gingerbread hearts), chocolates and stroopwafels.
  9. Hot chocolate: Bob's Belgian Hot Chocolate, which also has a stall in Wrigleyville.

Vegetarian and dietary notes: raclette, pretzels, potato pancakes, pierogi, strudel and roasted nuts all suit vegetarians. Gluten-free choices are limited. Vendors change from year to year, so check the official vendor map before you go. In Aurora, new 2026 vendors include Biró Kürtős (chimney cakes) and A Little Slice of Europe (European cheeses), alongside the returning bratwurst and poffertjes.

What to buy: ornaments, nutcrackers and handmade gifts

Many of the craft vendors are international. CBS Chicago has reported that "many of the Christkindlmarket vendors come from Germany every season." Shopping highlights:

  • Glass-blown ornaments: from traditional European designs to Chicago-themed ones like The Bean or a Chicago-style hot dog.
  • Nutcrackers and wooden figures: The Nutcracker Haus is a staple, including in Wrigleyville.
  • Cuckoo clocks, candles and beer steins: look for Kerzen Studio (candles) and Steincenter (new in Aurora).
  • Edible gifts: honey from Honighaus, olive oil from Olive Roots, tea from Chicago Teahouse, and goods from POOK.

Shop early in the season for the best selection, and ask about shipping for bulky items.

Entertainment and 30th-anniversary events

  • "The Night Before Christkindlmarket" (November 19): a ticketed preview party the evening before opening, with shopping, vendor chats and live entertainment. Organizers say it will be "extra special" this year.
  • The Christkind: the market's angel-like mascot, dressed in white and gold robes and a crown, opens the market and walks the grounds for photos.
  • "Culture and Cheer" tours: these behind-the-scenes tours run each day before the market opens to the public, and Block Club Chicago (August 20, 2026) reported they're returning for 2026. Leila Schmidt of German American Events told the outlet, "We are super-excited to celebrate 30 years at Daley Plaza this year." You'll need to book ahead through the market. For a guided afternoon instead, the holiday food and walking tour of festive sites ($85, three hours) includes VIP entry to the Christkindlmarket. It's rated 4.8/5 but from only 19 reviews, so read the recent ones before you book.
  • Live music: choirs, brass bands and holiday performers. Check the official event calendar for the daily schedule, which is usually posted close to opening.

Tips for visiting Christkindlmarket Chicago

  • Best time: weekdays between 11 a.m. and about 4 p.m. Avoid Friday and Saturday evenings, Black Friday weekend and the week before Christmas.
  • Crowds and lines: if the city caps capacity again, you'll queue outside the plaza. Once you're in, the raclette and Glühwein lines can still take a while, so eat at off-peak times.
  • Cash and cards: organizers haven't published a payment policy, and NBC Chicago reports that many vendors take only cash. Bring enough cash for food, drinks and small gifts, and a card for the larger stalls.
  • Weather: late-November and December temperatures in Chicago often sit near or below freezing. Wear insulated boots, wool socks, gloves you can use your phone in and a hat. Our Chicago winter packing list has the full checklist.
  • Kids: strollers are tough in crowds, so use a carrier on busy days. The non-alcoholic Tree mug makes a good keepsake for kids.
  • Accessibility: Daley Plaza is flat and at street level, but crowds make it hard to get around. Weekday mornings are easiest for wheelchair users. Check CTA station accessibility before you go.
  • Glühwein is 21+: bring ID.

Getting to Christkindlmarket

Daley Plaza (Loop)

  • CTA trains: Washington (Blue Line) comes up right at the plaza. Clark/Lake serves the Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Pink and Purple lines, and Lake (Red Line) connects to Washington through the Pedway.
  • Pedway: the underground walkway links Washington (Blue), Lake (Red) and the Daley Center, which helps on bitter days. The Pedway walking tour teaches you the route.
  • Metra: Union Station, Ogilvie, LaSalle Street and Millennium Station are all within walking distance.
  • Parking: downtown garages are pricey. Organizers have partnered with SpotHero on Millennium Garages discounts in past seasons, so check their parking page for a 2026 code. Transit is the better choice.

Wrigleyville: take the Red Line to Addison, or the #22 Clark or #152 Addison bus. Aurora: drive, or take Metra's BNSF line to Aurora and check the current schedule.

A half-day holiday walk from Daley Plaza

  1. Christkindlmarket (11 a.m.): arrive at opening. Get your mug, Glühwein and a raclette sandwich before the lunch crowd.
  2. The Chicago Picasso: the 50-foot steel sculpture stands right in the plaza, and it's the photo everyone takes.
  3. Macy's on State Street (2 blocks east): see the holiday windows. The Great Tree in the Walnut Room usually goes up in early to mid November, but 2026 dates hadn't been announced when we checked. Only diners with reservations can enter the restaurant, so book early.
  4. Millennium Park (about 10 minutes east): the 113th City of Chicago Christmas Tree is lit November 20 and stays up through January 10, 2027. Skate at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, which is scheduled to open November 20, weather permitting.
  5. Evening: catch a show in the Loop Theatre District, or ride the BYOB holiday lights tour on a double-decker bus (one hour, from $30). It's a new listing with no reviews yet, so check the details before you book.

Key 2026 dates to combine with the market

  • Friday, November 20: Christkindlmarket opens and the City Tree Lighting takes place in Millennium Park. Festivities start at 4 p.m., the ceremony at 6 p.m., and the lighting is around 6:30 p.m. The Millennium Park Holiday Market runs November 20–22.
  • Saturday, November 21: the 35th Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. Lights Festival Lane runs 11 a.m.–4 p.m. at Pioneer Court, and the parade starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by fireworks over the river. Our Magnificent Mile Lights Festival 2026 guide has the route, closures and viewing spots.
  • Fridays, December 4, 11 and 18: Millennium Park Holiday Sing-Along at 6 p.m.

The Chicago Loop food tour with deep-dish pizza and an Italian beef sandwich (from $84.99 on Viator, 4.9/5 from more than 1,000 reviews) covers six tastings on a walk through the Loop, so it pairs well with a market morning. Most architecture river cruises wind down in November; our Chicago architecture boat tour guide covers the season and the walking alternatives. If you're also visiting paid attractions, the Chicago CityPASS ($144, 4.7/5 from more than 1,000 reviews) covers Shedd Aquarium, Skydeck and three more picks, and our Chicago CityPASS and Go City comparison shows which pass suits a winter trip.

Final thoughts

The 30th season at Daley Plaza is a good reason to plan a trip, especially with the Tree Lighting and the Lights Festival falling on the same opening weekend. Book a Loop hotel early, since the November 20–22 weekend will be busy. Visit the market on a weekday afternoon, pick up the anniversary mug before it sells out, and fit in Macy's, the Picasso and Millennium Park on the same walk. Check the official Christkindlmarket site before you go, because capacity rules and schedules can still change.

How we put this together

The 2026 dates, hours and locations come from the organizers' announcement as reported by NBC Chicago, Block Club Chicago and CBS Chicago. Visitor numbers and the 2025 capacity limits come from WBBM Newsradio, the Chicago Sun-Times, CBS Chicago and Block Club Chicago. The 2025 merchandise prices are from NBC Chicago; the official Christkindlmarket site did not load for us when we checked, so confirm 2026 prices at the market. Tree lighting and rink dates come from the City of Chicago's announcements.

We earn a commission if you book through the GetYourGuide, Viator or hotel links on this page. It does not change the price you pay.
