Best indoor things to do in Chicago in winter, when it's freezing
When the wind chill drops below zero, head for Museum Campus, the Art Institute or the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. Add an observation deck at dusk, a show in the Loop and a meal you can reach without going outside, and a Chicago winter day stays warm from morning to night.

The short version
- Best all-day bad-weather plan: Museum Campus, where the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium share one lakefront site. If you'll visit four or more big attractions, pair it with a Chicago CityPASS ($144 adult, $114 child).
- Best winter-only event: Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, from November 7, 2026 into early January, included in general admission.
- Best free warm-up: the Chicago Cultural Center (daily 10 AM–5 PM, no ticket needed) and the Lincoln Park Conservatory (free, with a timed reservation).
Between November 2026 and March 2027, those big museums give you more warm hours for your money than anything else in the city. The Chicago CityPASS bundles the Shedd Aquarium and Skydeck with three more of the big indoor sights for $144, and it's rated 4.7/5 from 1,028 reviews on GetYourGuide. The calendar shows live availability for your dates.

The options below can fill out the rest of your Chicago trip.
Museums: Chicago's best indoor attractions in winter
Art Institute of Chicago
This is one of the world's great art museums, home to American Gothic, Nighthawks and Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. This winter's headline show is Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism (September 6, 2026 to January 3, 2027), a ticketed exhibition of more than 70 works that the Art Institute calls its first deep dive into Cassatt in more than 25 years. Also on view: Lee Miller: Fearless (to December 7, 2026), Jill Mulleady: The Passenger (to January 18, 2027), Utamaro: Elements of Beauty (to December 20, 2026) and Body and Being in African Art (opens November 2, 2026).
- Price: $32 for non-resident adults, $26 for seniors, students and teens 14–17, and free for kids under 14. A Fast Pass costs $40 for adults ($34 for seniors and students). The Chicago Sun-Times reports a $7 surcharge for the Cassatt show.
- Hours: 10–11 AM is for members, and the public enters after that. Check closing times and the Thursday late hours before you go.
- Time needed: 3–4 hours. On a short visit, go straight to the Impressionism galleries and the Thorne Miniature Rooms, then circle back.
- Tickets: the Art Institute fast-pass ticket starts at $40 and is rated 4.8/5 from 1,017 reviews.
Griffin Museum of Science and Industry (Griffin MSI)
This is the biggest single indoor day in Chicago. Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light opens on Saturday, November 7, 2026, with a tree lighting and cultural festival, and runs into early January (check the closing date on griffinmsi.org). It has more than 50 trees and displays decorated by local cultural groups, plus a four-story Grand Tree, and it's included in general admission. Anne Frank The Exhibition is also on view into early 2027. The museum usually holds an adults-only "Naughty or Nice" night in December (it was December 4 in 2025), so check the 2026 date.
- Price: general admission is about $26 for adults, with lower prices for children and Chicago residents; check current prices on griffinmsi.org. Dome films and tours such as the Coal Mine and the U-505 on-board tour cost extra.
- Hours: the museum opens daily, with longer hours on some holiday dates. Check the hours and holiday closures before you go.
- Time needed: 4 hours or more.
- Getting there: it's in Hyde Park, about 6 miles south of the Loop. Take the Metra Electric to 55th–56th–57th Street and walk a few minutes instead of waiting for a bus in the cold. Tickets are sold by the museum and through CityPASS.
Field Museum
Here you'll meet Máximo the titanosaur, SUE the T. rex and Inside Ancient Egypt. The big show this winter is the Pokémon Fossil Museum (through April 11, 2027), which sets Fossil Pokémon beside real fossils. It needs a separate timed add-on ticket on top of general admission, so book ahead for weekends and school holidays.
- Price: from $30 for non-resident adults, with lower prices for Chicago residents. Illinois residents get in free on Wednesdays (permanent exhibits only).
- Hours: daily 9 AM–5 PM, last entry 4 PM. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
- Time needed: 3–5 hours.
- Tickets: Field Museum tickets start at $29 on GetYourGuide, rated 4.7/5 from 868 reviews.
Shedd Aquarium
Beluga whales, the sharks of Wild Reef and the Amazon Rising rainforest make a warm, humid escape from January. General admission includes the special exhibit Underwater Beauty, and the new 4-D theater that opened in 2026 costs extra.
- Price: Shedd uses plan-ahead (dynamic) pricing for non-residents, so booking early and choosing an off-peak slot saves money. Chicago residents pay less.
- Hours: from Labor Day to Memorial Day, 9 AM–5 PM on weekdays and 9 AM–6 PM on weekends and holidays. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
- Time needed: 3–4 hours.
- Tickets: buy only from Shedd or its approved partners: CityPASS, Go City and some hotels. The Chicago CityPASS includes Shedd with its 4-D experience.
Adler Planetarium
The Adler was the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, and a dome show is a perfect hour out of the cold. On Wednesdays it switches to evening hours.
- Price: Museum Entry from $25 adult and $13 child. Sky shows are add-ons, sold with Museum Entry on the Adler's web store. Illinois residents get free museum entry on Wednesday nights.
- Hours: 9 AM–4 PM most days, and 4–10 PM on Wednesdays. Last admission is one hour before closing.
- Time needed: 2–3 hours. Tickets are sold by the Adler and through CityPASS.
More museums for a cold afternoon
- Chicago Cultural Center (free, daily 10 AM–5 PM): the world's largest Tiffany glass dome sits above Preston Bradley Hall. No ticket needed.
- National Museum of Mexican Art (Pilsen): free general admission and a superb permanent collection. Its Día de los Muertos exhibition traditionally runs into December, so check before you go.
- Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (near the Mag Mile): part of Bank of America's Museums on Us program. Check current prices.
- Chicago History Museum, DuSable Black History Museum, American Writers Museum, Driehaus Museum and Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum are all good 1–2 hour stops. Hours and prices change with the season, so check before you go.
Observation decks: Skydeck vs. 360 CHICAGO in winter
In winter you can see the skyline at dusk and still be down in time for dinner: sunset falls around 4:20 PM in early December, so golden hour and the city lights coming on both fit before 6 PM.
Skydeck Chicago (Willis Tower, 103rd floor)
Skydeck is the higher deck and home of The Ledge, the glass boxes 1,353 feet up, which are included with every ticket. It's rated 4.6/5 from 5,181 reviews on GetYourGuide.
- Price: from $32 adult and $24 youth (3–11) when booked direct; Expedited Entry from $55.
- Winter hours (October 1 to February 28): 9 AM–8 PM daily, Saturdays to 9 PM. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
360 CHICAGO (875 N. Michigan Ave, 94th floor)
360 CHICAGO has the better lake view and sits right on the Mag Mile. TILT, which tips you out over the street, is a paid extra. It's rated 4.4/5 from 3,884 reviews on GetYourGuide.
- Price: on 360chicago.com, general admission is $27 online and $35 at the gate. TILT & View is $45 online, Sip & View $44, and Sip, TILT & View $55; the gate packages run $54–$65.
- Hours: daily 9 AM–11 PM, with last entry about an hour before closing. Holiday hours differ: the deck has closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, with a 4 PM last entry on New Year's Eve, so check before you go.
Which one? Choose Skydeck for the thrill and the height. Choose 360 CHICAGO for the lake view, a drink and the later closing time. Low cloud can turn either one into a whiteout, so check the webcams before you go up; tickets usually aren't refunded for weather. Our Skydeck and 360 CHICAGO comparison has the full breakdown.
Indoor gardens: Chicago's conservatories in winter
- Garfield Park Conservatory: 2 acres under glass, one of the largest conservatories in the country. The 2026–27 Winter Flower Show runs November 25, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Hours are Wednesday 10 AM–8 PM and Thursday to Sunday 10 AM–5 PM, and it's closed Monday and Tuesday. Chicago residents get in free, and non-residents pay a small admission fee (check current prices). Reservations are recommended. Take the CTA Green Line to Conservatory–Central Park Drive.
- Lincoln Park Conservatory: free, but you need a timed reservation. It's open 10 AM–5 PM and closed Mondays (the Lincoln Park Conservancy lists Wednesday to Sunday), with last entry at 4:15 PM, and it's the easiest add-on to an afternoon at Lincoln Park Zoo or in Old Town. Its winter show usually runs on the same dates as Garfield's, but the 2026–27 dates weren't published when we checked, so check before you go.
Both glasshouses are kept at tropical temperatures, so wear layers you can take off.
Theater, comedy and live music
Broadway In Chicago's winter lineup at the CIBC, Nederlander, Cadillac Palace and Broadway Playhouse theaters includes:
| Show | Dates |
|---|---|
| Jersey Boys | November 10–22, 2026 |
| Mrs. Doubtfire | November 24–29, 2026 |
| The Hip Hop Nutcracker | November 24–29, 2026 |
| Blue Man Group: A New Holiday Surprise | November 24 to December 13, 2026 |
| Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical | December 9–27, 2026 |
| Potted Potter (Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place) | December 15, 2026 to January 3, 2027 |
| Bluey's Big Play | December 18–20, 2026 |
| The Sound of Music | December 22–27, 2026 |
| Maybe Happy Ending (CIBC Theatre) | January 5–17, 2027 |
| Oh, Mary! (CIBC Theatre) | January 19 to February 7, 2027 |
The Unauthorized Hallmark(ish) Parody Musical also plays in December, but listings disagree on its end date, so check the official calendar. Tickets are sold through Broadway In Chicago.
Beyond Broadway: the Goodman Theatre's holiday A Christmas Carol is a Chicago tradition, and so are Steppenwolf, the Lyric Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Chicago improv started at The Second City in Old Town. For music, the Green Mill (jazz, in Uptown), Kingston Mines and Buddy Guy's Legends (blues) are classic cold-night picks. Schedules change weekly, so check before you go.
Sports: Bulls and Blackhawks at the United Center
The Bulls (NBA) and the Blackhawks (NHL) share the United Center, and both are mid-season from November through March, which makes a game one of the best warm night-time plans in the city. Game-night crowds pack the CTA, so arrive early and see the Michael Jordan statue in the atrium. The teams set the 2026–27 home schedules and prices, so check before you go. Blackhawks game tickets start at $91 on GetYourGuide, rated 4.7/5 but from only 14 reviews, so read the recent ones. Bulls tickets are sold through the team.
Food halls and eating indoors
First, a correction many guides haven't made: Time Out Market Chicago in Fulton Market closed permanently in January 2026. NBC Chicago and WGN reported January 23 as its last day.
- Sterling Food Hall (formerly Revival Food Hall), 125 S. Clark St.: a dozen-plus local stalls in the Loop, but it's a weekday spot (Time Out lists Monday to Friday, 8 AM–8 PM).
- Chicago French Market, 131 N. Clinton St. (Ogilvie Transportation Center): connected to the Pedway through Ogilvie. Open Monday to Friday 7 AM–7 PM and Saturday 9 AM–4 PM; closed Sunday.
- Deep-dish pizza: expect a 40–45 minute bake. Order ahead or put your name in and wait inside. It's the most Chicago way to sit out a blizzard.
- Food tours: pizza and Loop food tours run all year and spend much of their time indoors. The Chicago Loop food tour with deep-dish pizza and an Italian beef sandwich (from $84.99 on Viator, 4.9/5 from more than 1,000 reviews) covers six tastings.
Shopping and the Chicago Pedway
The Chicago Pedway is a network of tunnels, concourses and bridges that, according to the City of Chicago, links more than 40 blocks of the Central Business District and covers roughly five miles. The city's official map (revised May 2025) lists connections including Macy's on State Street, Block 37, the Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Station, the Harris Theater, Ogilvie and Union Station, along with several hotels (see below).
- Hours: plan on weekday business hours; some segments open evenings and weekends as posted at their entrances. Weekends, especially Sundays, are patchy, and a few segments (201 N. Clark, 77 W. Wacker and the Thompson Center, for example) were marked temporarily closed.
- Tip: download the city's Pedway map before you go. Signs are inconsistent, and the system doesn't connect end to end. The two-hour Chicago Underground Pedway walking tour (4.7/5 from 335 reviews) takes you through it with a guide.
Indoor shopping on the Mag Mile: Water Tower Place, home to the Broadway Playhouse, and 900 North Michigan are classic warm-up stops between 360 CHICAGO and dinner.
Navy Pier: the Wintrust Winter WonderFest fills 170,000 square feet of Festival Hall from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027, opening at 10 AM and closed on Christmas Day; November 30 to December 2 aren't on its public schedule. Ice skating is included. Tickets are $27 bought online at least 24 hours ahead and $32 at the door or within 24 hours, and children 2 and under get in free. A ride on the Centennial Wheel, whose gondolas are enclosed and heated, is a $10 add-on. The Chicago Children's Museum is also at the pier. Tickets are sold on navypier.org.
Unusual indoor fun
- Chicago Athletic Association hotel (Michigan Ave): the historic Game Room has board games, pool and bocce, and it's open to non-guests. Hours vary.
- Arcade bars: Emporium and Headquarters Beercade pair retro games with craft beer. Most are 21+ at night.
- Climbing gyms, bowling and escape rooms are easy to find across the North Side.
- Medieval Times (Schaumburg): a dinner show in the suburbs; you'll need a car or rideshare.
Places like these open, close and change their policies often, so check before you go.
Free indoor things to do in Chicago
- Chicago Cultural Center: free, daily 10 AM–5 PM.
- Lincoln Park Conservatory: free with a timed reservation.
- National Museum of Mexican Art: free general admission.
- Garfield Park Conservatory: free for Chicago residents.
- Illinois resident free days: the Field Museum (Wednesdays), the Adler (Wednesday nights), and selected dates at the Art Institute, Shedd and Griffin MSI. You need proof of Illinois residency, so out-of-state visitors don't qualify.
- Bank of America Museums on Us: cardholders get one free general admission (with photo ID) on the first full weekend of each month. In Chicago that covers the Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute, Griffin MSI (Sundays only), the Illinois Holocaust Museum's Experience360 and the MCA. The next weekends are November 7–8 and December 5–6, 2026.
Three cold-day itineraries
1. Museum Campus day (families)
Get to the Shedd when it opens at 9 AM, spend the morning there and eat lunch inside. Walk to the Field Museum for SUE and the Pokémon Fossil Museum (book the add-on ahead). On a Wednesday, finish at the Adler after 4 PM for a dome show and the skyline. Have dinner in the South Loop.
2. Loop and Pedway day (weekdays)
Start with coffee at the Chicago French Market and take the Pedway east. Spend late morning with Cassatt at the Art Institute. Have lunch at Sterling Food Hall, then see the Tiffany dome at the Chicago Cultural Center. Go up Skydeck around 4 PM for sunset, then catch a show at the CIBC or Nederlander theater.
3. Mag Mile day (couples)
Spend the morning at the MCA, then take a long lunch and shop at Water Tower Place and 900 North Michigan. Time 360 CHICAGO for dusk with a CloudBar drink, add TILT if you dare, then go to dinner and a late set at a jazz or blues club. Between November 27 and January 3, add Navy Pier's WonderFest.
Visiting in late November? Our guide to Chicago in November 2026 has every event date, and our 1, 2 and 3-day Chicago itineraries fill in the rest of the trip.
How to save money: CityPASS vs. C3 vs. Go City
| Pass | Adult / child | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago CityPASS | $144 / $114 | Shedd and Skydeck, plus 3 of: Field Museum, 360 CHICAGO, Griffin MSI, Art Institute, Adler, Shoreline architecture cruise; 9 consecutive days | 4–5 big attractions on a first trip |
| Chicago C3 | $109 / $79 | Any 3 of 9 (the above plus the Centennial Wheel); 9 days | Short winter weekends |
| Go City Explorer Pass (3 choices) | $109 adult | 3 attractions from a list of 30+ | Mixing big names with smaller extras |
| Go City All-Inclusive | From $149 adult (1 day) | Unlimited attractions per day | Packing a lot into each day |
Our take: in winter, skip the river cruise option, because the seasonal cruises generally don't run in the depths of winter (check before you go). Build your CityPASS around the Field Museum, Griffin MSI and the Art Institute instead. CityPASS's Adler option includes two dome shows, and its Griffin MSI option includes Anne Frank The Exhibition plus one special experience, while C3 covers general admission only. Neither pass includes TILT, although CityPASS holders get $1 off. The Go City Explorer Pass is rated 4.5/5 from 446 reviews and the All-Inclusive pass 4.5/5 from 374. Our Chicago CityPASS vs Go City comparison has the full breakdown.
Where to stay: hotels connected to the Pedway
These hotels appear on the City of Chicago's official Pedway map (May 2025). All are in the Loop and Lakeshore East, a short walk from Millennium Park and the Art Institute:
- Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park (200 N. Columbus Dr.)
- Hyatt Regency Chicago, East and West Towers (151 and 201 E. Wacker Dr.)
- Swissôtel Chicago (323 E. Wacker Dr.)
- Renaissance Chicago Downtown (1 W. Wacker Dr.)
- voco / Holiday Inn at 350 N. Orleans (the Apparel Mart, near the Merchandise Mart)
The Pedway connections work best on weekdays, and some run through neighboring buildings, so ask the hotel about current access. See hotels in the Loop. For Museum Campus, a South Loop hotel on Michigan Avenue cuts your cold walk to the Field Museum and Shedd: see hotels in the South Loop. For shopping and 360 CHICAGO, stay on the Mag Mile: see hotels on the Magnificent Mile.
For the coat, the boots and the layers, see our Chicago winter packing list.
Indoor Chicago in winter: FAQ
What is the best indoor thing to do in Chicago in winter?
For most visitors it's a day on Museum Campus, where the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium share one lakefront site. From November 7, 2026 into early January, Christmas Around the World at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is the top seasonal pick.
Is the Chicago CityPASS worth it in winter?
Yes, if you'll use at least four attractions. It costs $144 per adult and covers the Shedd Aquarium and Skydeck plus three choices. In winter, pick museums over the river cruise.
When does Christmas Around the World at Griffin MSI run in 2026?
It opens on Saturday, November 7, 2026 and runs into early January 2027; check the closing date on griffinmsi.org. It's included with general admission, about $26 for adults.
Are there free indoor things to do in Chicago?
Yes. The Chicago Cultural Center, the Lincoln Park Conservatory (reservation required) and the National Museum of Mexican Art are free. Bank of America cardholders also get free entry to several museums on the first full weekend of each month.
Is Time Out Market Chicago still open?
No. It closed permanently in January 2026. Try the Chicago French Market or Sterling Food Hall (weekdays) instead.
Can you walk around downtown Chicago underground?
Partly. The Pedway links many Loop buildings, stations and hotels, but many segments open only during weekday business hours, and it's patchy on weekends.
Skydeck or 360 CHICAGO in winter?
Skydeck is higher and includes The Ledge, with winter hours of 9 AM–8 PM (Saturdays to 9 PM). 360 CHICAGO has better lake views and is open until 11 PM, with last entry about an hour before closing.
What are Navy Pier's Winter WonderFest 2026 dates and prices?
It runs November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027, daily from 10 AM except Christmas Day. Tickets are $27 bought online at least 24 hours ahead or $32 at the door, and skating is included.
Make the cold work for you
A Chicago winter trip works when you plan around warm anchors: a museum in the morning, the skyline at 4:30 PM and a show or a game at night. Book timed tickets early for the Pokémon Fossil Museum, the Cassatt show and holiday-season weekends, and if you're doing four or more big sights, buy a pass. Then, when the sun comes out, head outside for Christkindlmarket 2026, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival or Chicago's holiday lights.
How we put this together
Prices, hours and dates come from each venue's own website or its Choose Chicago listing, checked in October 2026: the Art Institute, Griffin MSI, the Field Museum, Shedd, the Adler, both conservatories, Skydeck, 360 CHICAGO, Navy Pier, Broadway In Chicago, CityPASS and Go City. The Cassatt surcharge comes from the Chicago Sun-Times, the Time Out Market closure from NBC Chicago and WGN, and the Pedway details from the City of Chicago's map. Ratings are GetYourGuide's and Viator's own figures, checked on October 25, 2026. Prices, hours and dates can change, so confirm with each venue before you go.
We earn a commission if you book through the GetYourGuide, Viator or hotel links on this page. It does not change the price you pay.
